A little more than two years after the implementation of the VAR in Liga MX, the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) announced the departure of Arturo Angeles from the Referees Committee. A key part of the implementation of video refereeing in Mexico and for institutional relations with the International Board, Angeles worked as Director of Referee Instruction at the FMF from 30 August 2017 to 31 December 2020. Among the changes that are coming to the Referees Committee, MedioTiempo was able to find out that the person who will be taking care of the VAR issues and the instruction of Mexican referees is Alberto Undiano Mallenco, a former Spanish referee who was active in La Liga for two decades, from 2000 to 2019.
Undiano was born on 8 October 1973 in Pamplona, a town in the province of Navarra. He has two degrees: first in sociology, in 1996, and the second in political science, completed in 2003, when he was already refereeing in the Spanish First Division. He debuted in La Liga on 10 September 2000, in a game between Numancia and Oviedo, becoming the youngest referee in the highest level of Spanish football. He refereed five matches at the 2007 U-17 World Cup in Canada, one of them being the Final of the tournament. In 2009 he was one of the referees chosen for the U-20 World Cup where he was assigned three matches, including a semi-final. In 2010 came his top achievement when he was selected by FIFA for the World Cup in South Africa, where he refereed three games, including the Round of 16 between the Netherlands and Slovakia. He was also appointed to continental competitions such as UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League and concluded his career with final of the UEFA Nations League between the Netherlands and Portugal in 2019.
